I’ve often heard, and I used to tell others, that imagined love can feel more perfect because it has no expectations. In our imagination, we can picture anything we want. But in real life, there’s someone who responds to us, and this often doesn’t match what we expect. When our expectations aren’t met, it can lead to frustration and put a strain on our relationships. Remember, embracing the reality of love, with all its imperfections, can lead to more genuine happiness.
Imagination can sometimes be challenging for us as human beings; however, that same creative power has given us beautiful poems, stories, movies, inventions, new technologies, and AI. Thanks to all these wonderful creations, we’ve gradually entered a world that feels like a magical Disney island.
Whenever we plan to travel somewhere or meet someone special, someone who holds a very dear place in our hearts, we often find ourselves replaying these moments in our minds. This is especially true at night, when our thoughts tend to settle down. These memories tend to linger in the back of our minds, and as the excitement grows about meeting that person or planning the trip, these images become more vivid in our minds. Essentially, when our brain senses our excitement, it naturally responds by visualising these moments. It’s like a little rehearsal, helping us get ready to enjoy the trip or to be at our best for that meeting or celebration. However, sometimes overthinking and too much excitement can make it harder to truly enjoy the moment.
When you imagine the upcoming meeting and get ready for it, your mind begins rehearsing what you are going to say. But keep in mind that success isn’t guaranteed because everything is happening only in your head. The other person isn’t aware of your thoughts. So, if we go into the situation expecting too much, the likelihood of things not going as planned increases.
This kind of mental rehearsal isn’t necessarily a bad thing. For a professional meeting, it can be quite helpful in preparing you better. However, for a personal meeting, it might not be as effective because we can’t be sure whether the other person is putting in the same level of effort. Think of it like trying to impress someone with a bold makeup look. If they prefer a more natural style, instead of creating a positive impression, it could have the opposite effect. It might not turn out the way you hoped.
Usually, people tend to believe gossip or whatever information they hear right away. They often skip verifying the facts and instead jump to conclusions about the subject based on that gossip and incomplete details.
Our minds work differently when it comes to processing reality and imagination. Throughout history, we’ve often expected the worst and prepared for it. Over time, this has become a pattern-anticipating threats like natural disasters, weather changes, or animal attacks. Back then, communication wasn’t as important or necessary as it is today. However, the main challenge we face today is that we’ve started living more in our imagination than in reality. Our brains tend to create worries that can eventually become all-consuming, especially as circumstances seem to encourage this kind of thinking.
Sometimes, when we don’t hear back from someone, it’s easy to think they’re avoiding us. But often, the real reasons are simpler – they might be busy, not have seen the message yet, or simply forgotten to reply. Similarly, when we experience chest pain or other symptoms, our minds might jump straight to the worst-case scenarios like a heart attack or cancer. Or if someone is travelling and doesn’t answer calls, we might worry about an accident. The truth is that things are usually not as bad as they seem. Until we receive actual news, it’s best to stay calm and patient.
In this situation, it’s helpful to gently shift your focus to the physical world around you. Bring your awareness to the present rather than getting lost in imagination. While thinking positively can be encouraging, it might not always feel practical. Instead, try engaging in activities like listening to your favourite songs, reading a good book, cooking, or going for a drive, anything that helps redirect your mind and bring a sense of calm. Remember, our thoughts can affect us very quickly, and our mind learns from what we focus on. We can even influence our own happiness through practices like meditation. For instance, if you love someone who isn’t always there when you need them, you can gently guide your mind away from worries and thoughts that might bring you down. This can help you feel better and more at peace.
Such a teenager you are becoming. This is what happens when you don’t fall in love when you were a teenager.
